(The Daily News) Here is This Day in History for July 2, 2009. The Continental Congress, on July 2, 1776, votes to break away from Britain and forms the 13 colonies. While flying over the Pacific Ocean, Amelia Earhart's plane disappears and neither her or the plane is ever found. Author Ernest Hemingway commits suicide;in 1961 by shooting himself at his home in Idaho. On July 2, 1881, President Garfield was shot, leading to his death two and a half months later.
